Is Epinephrine Snap-V safe for use by non-health care professionals?
No. Keep out of reach of children. Epinephrine Snap-V is designed for use by health care professionals licensed to administer prescription medication only.
Why is the anterolateral aspect of the thigh (vastus lateralis muscle) the best site to administer the epinephrine in the Epinephrine Snap-V kit?
The preferred location for injection is the anterolateral aspect of the thigh (vastus lateralis muscle) because of its location, size, and available blood flow. This location is the middle third of the thigh between the greater trochanter and the knee. When injecting, lift the vastus lateralis muscle away from the bone. Epinephrine may be injected through clothing if necessary.
Do not inject into the buttocks, digits, hands, or feet.
Do not administer repeated injections of epinephrine in the same site as the resulting vasoconstriction may cause tissue necrosis.
Why the 23-gauge needles?
23-gauge 1-inch needles are appropriately sized for a vastus lateralis muscle injection or subcutaneous injections.
Why the 1-cc syringe when such a small amount of medication is needed?
We assessed the syringe’s function and use as we developed the kit. The 1-mL syringe barrel is safe and recommended for both subcutaneous injections as well as vastus lateralis muscle injections.
What are the labels for?
Clinicians may choose to prepare multiple epinephrine syringes when faced with an episode of anaphylaxis. When this is the case, the clinician can label each syringe with the dose prepared.
Are there any precautions I need to take when administering epinephrine?
Protect epinephrine from light and freezing.
Inspect visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration. Do not use if the solution is colored or cloudy, or if it contains particulate matter.
Administration may aggravate angina pectoris or ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in patients with underlying heart disease. Administer with caution when used intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
Patients with hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, or pheochromocytoma are at greater risk for having adverse reactions when used intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
See package insert for INDICATIONS and USAGE, CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS, PRECAUTIONS, ADVERSE REACTIONS and OVERDOSAGE.
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and your prescriber’s orders.
